Yesterday I lost my phone in a cab. Or maybe someone else borrowed it without me noticing. Not sure. I last used it at the hospital where Angie and her sisters were born, then we caught a cab back to our apartment, and when we arrived, I suddenly felt that it was not in my pocket. I tried to contact the cab company, went back to the hospital to look for the driver, found many listeners very sympathetic to my sad story, and in the end, I realize that in a city of 2 million, I’m not likely to find that cab, and I’m not even sure that’s where I lost it.
So now I’m without a phone and it feels like I’m missing something important – my maps, my camera, my Spanish dictionary, my notes to myself, my kindle, my travel resource, etc. etc. Until now, it was my blogging tool as well. Now I am borrowing Angie’s device and I’ll have to have the sisters send me photos. Maybe it’s all a good reminder that I was too dependent on it. I’d rather have that lesson come at another time.
But actually I’m not alone at all. Carole was waiting for us at the airport when we arrived in Quito, and Eliana arrived early yesterday morning. So now we’re all here in Quito and it’s great. We have an apartment here for a few days. We’ve gone to HCJB and to the hospital and we’ve had several great taxi cab drivers who give us tourism advice and take us shopping and give me Spanish lessons. I’ll write more about it when I have access to pictures.

Hello Walter and sisters,
Ouch. You have the good humour to write about losing that very handy machine. I guess you’ve lost hope that you will find it – you have our sympathy.
It sounds like you are making great strides learning spanish – I know Carole was feeling very appreciative having you part of the travelling squad with your ability to communicate as you make your way around Ecuador.
Tim and i are reading and enjoying your blog postings. Please keep them coming. Look forward to seeing some pictures of HCJB. The pictures in my head 55 years or more old.
